Using the Lifelong Guidelines and LIFESKILLS in the Classroom & Schoolwide

As every employer knows, a sense of community results in higher quality and quantity of output in less time and with greater satisfaction. The same is true for academic learning in the classroom.

Learn how to use the Lifelong Guidelines and LIFESKILLS to:

  • Create a strong sense of inclusion that embraces everyone as an equal member of the class family—a family dedicated to academic learning as well as social and personal growth
  • Transform classroom management to classroom leadership and the Lifelong Guidelines and LIFESKILLS to what makes life work in the classroom and beyond
  • Take students through the three stages of group development to give them the social and collaborative skills needed to thrive in the classroom and in future settings such as family and at work
  • Teach civic skills—knowledge of how our democratic system works andpractice using the skills to participate in making our system work, including civic discourse to resolve differences and move the country forward
  • Give needed tools—for both teacher and students —for dealing with misbehavior at its root causes
  • Speed and deepen learning

The Lifelong Guidelines include: Active Listening, No Put-Downs, Truthfulness, Trustworthiness, and Personal Best.

Personal Best is defined by the 19 LIFESKILLS organized by the three stages of group development:

  • Stage 1: Developing a Sense of Belonging using the LIFESKILLS of Friendship, Caring, Sense of Humor, Cooperation, and Patience
  • Stage 2: Developing Common Ground using the LIFESKILLS of Common Sense, Courage, Curiosity, Flexibility, and Integrity
  • Stage 3: Taking Action using the LIFESKILLS of Responsibility, Initiative, Problem Solving, Organization, Resourcefulness, Creativity, Effort, Perseverance, and Pride

Participants will leave with dozens of strategies for dealing with misbehavior and for teaching new behaviors that support academic learning as well as personal and social growth.
